I am writing to add my voice to those around the world who condemn the Venezuelan government's shutdown of RCTV in May 2007, and RCTV International in January 2010. The world knows that both of these deplorable acts drew mass protests into the streets of Caracas and Mérida, and led to a student movement that has suffered the loss of lives among its members. Those who condemned the first closure of RCTV included the European Parliament, then US Senators Clinton, Obama, Kennedy and many others, Human Rights Foundation, Reporters Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, among others. The recent shut down of RCTV-International has been already condemned by Human Rights Foundation, Reporters Without Borders, Committee to Protect Journalists, Inter-American Press Association, Human Rights Watch, and many other human rights and journalism organizations.

I respectfully request that you communicate to your government that it should reverse this decision and allow the Venezuelan people access to a pluralistic media, the cornerstone of the free society that is rightfully theirs.
